Founded on 24th August 1989, The Cairns
Rock and Roll Dance Club first operated from Birdies Night Club. This
small Night Club was within the Great Northerner Hotel in Lake Street
on the site currently occupied by Just Jeans. Club Nights were on
Tuesday Nights for beginners and Thursday nights for intermediate and
advanced lessons.
|
Due to restrictions of size and licensing
laws, the club moved to Night Hawks in the Nest Night Club and then the
Railway Institute Hall (where Target now stands within Cairns Central)
during 1990.
|
Like all small Clubs at inception, the
Cairns Rock and Roll Club nearly faltered, when on 3rd June 1991
lack of participation raised the possibility that the fledgling club
would be folded.
|
In an attempt to revitalise the club a
move to the Stratford Hotel was made on 17th June 1991. After a
stay of only a few months the club realised the advantage of moving
to bigger and more central premises and moved to the Newmarket Hotel
in Manunda on 21st October 1991.
|
With both the injection of new blood
and a better location, the club numbers picked up and the club began
to rock. Incorporation as an Association was proposed and following
a concerted effort incorporation was achieved on 27th May 1992. By
now the Club had insurances in place and a regular teaching base.
|
31st January 1994 and club activities
moved to Damaris Licensed Italian Restaurant function room. This
move was prompted by the management of the Newmarket remodeling the
lounge area of the Hotel making our continued activities there hard
to manage. Whilst Damaris had an excellent feel and
atmosphere, the dance floor was small. During 1994 the Club
conducted 24 public performances.
|
As club numbers continued to rise, the
Committee again felt the need to seek out premises with a larger dance
floor and following negotiations, the Club moved its center of operations
to the Cairns Yacht Club on the foreshore of the Cairns Harbor on 12th
May 1997.
|
With the potential of the Yacht Club being
relocated, the Club took the opportunity to move its base on June 1998.
This time the club found a most excellent venue at the Cairns City Club
at 143 Abbott Street. This venue was a new self contained Function Room
within the City Club with a large dance floor and is fully airconditioned.
|
With changes in management and attitude at
the City Club coupled with it's eventual closure. The club was forced
to find yet another home. This was to be Croswell Hall
of Cairns State High School.
|
To start the year 2007 the club moved to
the De Jarlais Function Centre at The Cairns Showground.
